3 things you should definitely do in Salzburg City and the surrounding area 1. climb at least one of the three city mountains

You can simply interrupt your shopping or sightseeing tour at any time for a detour to the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg. The starting point is always the city center, once on the left bank and once on the right bank of the Salzach. The main access points to the Mönchsberg can even be accessed with a baby carriage. The Kapuzinerberg, on the other hand, is reached via a staircase with countless steps, which can sometimes take your breath away. In return, you get exciting views of the otherwise hidden and sometimes elaborately greened roof terraces of the old residential buildings in Linzergasse.

You should plan a little more time for the 1,287 m high Gaisberg. Numerous hiking trails lead from the districts of Gnigl, Aigen or Parsch to the Gaisberg. Don't forget sturdy shoes! The more athletic can also conquer the Gaisberg by bike. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, simply take the number 151 bus from Mirabellplatz to the Gaisberg. The circular hiking trail is then ideal for a leisurely stroll.

2. enjoy Salzburg's beer culture

Beer has been brewed in Salzburg for more than 600 years and two of the oldest breweries still exist today.

The Stiegl brewery dates back to 1492 and is now Austria's largest private brewery. From the terrace of the Stiegl cellar in the city center, you have a fantastic view of Salzburg Cathedral.

Beer has been brewed at the Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln since 1621. The seats under the chestnut trees in the garden are particularly beautiful. Up to 1,400 people can be seated in the garden of Austria's largest beer restaurant on warm summer evenings.

9 other breweries in and around Salzburg provide a wide variety of beers. It's worth trying!

3. try the Salzburger Nockerl

Salzburger Nockerl are certainly the most famous dessert associated with the city of Mozart. However, very few people know how to make this specialty. Salzburger Nockerl consist of eggs, sugar and flour. The shape is meant to symbolize the city's mountains. You can try this specialty at the Arthotel Blaue Gans in the centre of Salzburg, for example.
