An Impressive Diversity & Very Special Characteristics
Food - Traditions - Nature
Each of Upper Austria’s regions has its own very special characteristics. So do the farms, products and traditions in this diverse province. Have a look at the rural architecture: mountain farms in the south, farmhouses made of granite blocks in the north and impressive four-sided farmyards in the plains. A farm’s size and shape is influenced by the landscape it’s situated in - rolling countryside, mountainous terrain or endless expanses. And the best thing is: on a farm holiday, you can stay in those historic buildings!
Poor soils, natural wetlands, fertile plains, lush alpine pastures, dense forests - our farmers do not only produce locally grown food, they also play a key role in preserving our rural landscape. See for yourself and explore the great diversity on this seemingly small corner of the world.
Natural Wonders Bursting with Colour
See Alpine Wildflowers & Ancient Trees
Every season has its appeal. In spring, nature is bursting with colour: fruit trees in bloom in the Innviertel-Hausruckwald region, yellow fields of rapeseed in the Mühlviertel region and fragrant wildflowers in the Kalkalpen National Park region. In summer, it’s time to swim in natural lakes and rivers, join scenic boat tours or set out on a water sports adventure. Dive into the crystal-clear lakes of the Salzkammergut region in a picturesque mountain scenery.
Explore the Mühlviertel region on horseback in autumn. It’s a paradise for trail riders. Forests in orange, red and green as far as the eye can see - a wonderful sight, in particular the forested hillsides in the Kalkalpen National Park region! Speed down the pistes there in winter or enjoy the silence in the Innviertel-Hausruckwald region while you’re making your way across a field covered in deep snow with your snowshoes or cross-country skis. The Zentralraum region has exciting cultural amenities and events on offer all year round. How about shopping in the city of Linz?
Sustainable and in Harmony with Nature
Organic? Yes, Proud of It.
In Upper Austria, 50% of our hosts run an organic farm - and the number is steadily increasing! Our family farmers care about nature and their livestock. The food that they produce with their own hands, on their own soils, is precious. The organic farmers are proud to work in harmony with nature and to sell high-quality and healthy food.
Don’t miss out on a delicious souvenir. Back home, it will make you think back of your holiday with a smile! It feels good to know that a farm holiday is more than just a relaxing break for you. It also helps towards protecting our beautiful Mother Earth!
Upper Austria - A Paradise for Food Lovers
Fresh Bread, Delicious Cheese, Tasty Dumplings
Upper Austria is a land of hearty culinary delights. The local delicacies on the menu are one of a kind. Are you craving “Mühlviertler Leinölerdäpfel” (mashed potatoes with flax seed oil), “Innviertler Speckknödel” (dumplings filled with bacon), “Linzer Torte” (shortcake with nuts and redcurrant jam) or a fresh, pan-roasted fish from Lake Traunsee? These mouth-watering delights taste especially good. Why? Because they are made with locally grown, seasonal products and prepared with a great deal of love.
A huge variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs grows in the farmer’s gardens and in the fields. Some of our family farms bake bread with a crispy crust using home-grown grains only. You can't get milk any fresher than right from the barn. It’s the basic ingredient for delicious cheese, yoghurt and quark - produced directly on the farm. Taste these mouth-watering delights on the breakfast table! Would you like to collect your egg from the henhouse yourself? You’re welcome to peek over the farmers’ shoulder when they harvest their produce. If you’re lucky, the farmer might give away one of her secret recipes. Yes, the table on the farm is laden with culinary treats. Enjoy your meal!
Upper Austria Is Rich in Tradition
On the Farm, You Are Part of It!
On the farm, you can experience local customs and traditions at first hand whether it’s the lively maypole celebrations, bonfires to celebrate summer solstice or Thanksgiving. At these special occasions, people wear the traditional garment. It might be the lederhosen or an indigo blue-dyed dress, depending on the region. During Advent, life is calming down on the family farms. Grandpa tells fairy tales, mum bakes biscuits and everyone’s quiet on Christmas eve, when the whole family goes to the barn burning incense and palm branches in a pan (“Räuchern”). That’s an unforgettable experience for guests of all ages! During your farm holiday in Upper Austria, you’ll be rewarded with a restorative break and wonderful memories.
Life on a farm is exciting and diverse. You’ll be amazed! There’s a time to work and a time to contemplate, a time to harvest and a time to celebrate. What these times all have in common: traditions, customs and culinary delights from the farm always play an important role.
Our family farmers in Upper Austria are looking forward to welcoming you!
