"It is the respect for the land and the landscape that is evident in every product and every meal."
Gerhild Krumlacher
High up in the rolling hills of Carinthia, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the Graierhuabn preserves a piece of living history. Gerhild, the passionate landlady of this alpine hut, interweaves the centuries-old family tradition with a deep commitment to the careful use of natural resources and regional cuisine.
The heart of the farm: the farm store
"It was my father who lovingly renovated the hut to protect it from decay," says Gerhild as she guides us through the small but carefully stocked farm store. This store, an innovation that was introduced four years ago, is the heart of the farm, which is located not far from the alpine hut. The farm store offers guests access to fresh, regional produce, even on Sundays when most stores are closed. From freshly baked bread to handmade cheese, the products in the store reflect the regional culinary diversity of the Metnitz Valley. Some of the food on offer is also produced or processed in-house. "Regionality is more important to me than organic farming," Gerhild emphasizes and explains that sustainability is reflected in a wide variety of factors for her. It is the respect for the land and the landscape that is reflected in every product and every meal. This respect is also reflected in the hut's careful water supply, which is ensured by a recently expanded system that makes fresh spring water available at all times, even in this idyllically remote location.
Future-oriented heritage and deep roots
Gerhild's commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in the way she runs the farm and the farm store. The products she chooses and the producers she works with are carefully selected to protect the environment and support the local economy. Guests at the Graierhuabn can taste this philosophy when they enjoy not only the magnificent view of the countryside, but also the aromatic delicacies of the region.
Short distances and diverse flavors
Trout can be caught in the farm's own fish pond, which is just a short walk from the alpine hut, and freshly prepared in the fully equipped hut. The "Eierschwammerln" (chanterelles) that are often found in the surrounding forests are also often a reason for booking, as Gerhild tells us - and she also conjures up a quick summer dish from regional ingredients.
Guests become friends
Many guests at the Graier Huabn are regulars who see the hut as part of their own family history. "They come as guests and leave as friends," says Gerhild with a smile on her face. At the Graier Huabn, they find a place where they can not only experience nature, but also become an integral part of it.
A heritage that inspires
The legacy of Gerhild's family lives on in every detail of the Graier Huabn - from the careful renovation of the hut to the careful selection and provision of food and the loving care given to guests. She offers her guests not just a vacation, but a return to real values and a rediscovery of the pleasures that unspoiled nature and a conscious way of life have to offer.
