An Up-and-Coming Wine-Growing Region

The long history of viticulture in Upper Austria dates back more than 1,000 years. The provincial capital of Linz as well as other parts of the province once were renowned wine-producing regions. Back in the 15th century, the area where we now find the university and the castle of Linz were covered by countless vineyards.

Numerous names of villages, houses, streets and plots still reflect the rich tradition of viticulture in Upper Austria. In Linz, the street "Weingartshofstraße" and the  farm houses "Oberer Weingarten" ("Upper Vineyard") and "Unterer Weingarten" ("Lower Vineyard") located in the district of St. Magdalena are only some of the examples. In former times, winemaking was common not only around Linz but along the entire Danube river in Upper Austria, in the far west (Innviertel Region) and the Kremstal valley. Even in the Salzkammergut region, you could find winemakers.
