Sustainability on Our Farm
For us, sustainability means farming in harmony with nature, animals, and resources—so that future generations can also experience a vibrant cultural landscape. Many natural cycles function directly on our farm.
Farming in a Natural Cycle
Our meadows provide feed for our cows and goats. This keeps essential nutrients within the farm’s natural cycle. We completely avoid synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Additional measures to support soil fertility and biodiversity include:
- biodiversity areas for plants, insects, and wildlife
- traditional orchard meadows with tall fruit trees as habitats and food sources
- herbs, blossoms, and leaves from our meadows for teas and herbal stamp massages
- our own vegetable garden and a variety of berries for snacking
- sustainable forest management with reforestation of species-rich mixed forests
- purchased feed (e.g., barley and feed for chickens, rabbits, and alpacas) sourced in organic quality
Sustainably Built and Naturally Furnished
A large part of our farmhouse is thermally insulated and helps save heating energy. For construction and furnishing, we mainly use wood from our own forest and solid wood furniture.
Also important to us:
- our own spring water directly on the farm
- a woodchip heating system using timber from our own forest
- solar energy for hot water and heating
- consistent waste separation within the municipal system
- organic waste reused meaningfully on the farm (e.g., as animal feed)
- we avoid plastic as much as possible
Energy from Sun, Wind, and Community
Our photovoltaic system has been producing electricity since 1994 and has been continuously expanded. Together with electricity storage and solar thermal energy, the farm is almost energy self-sufficient throughout the year.
In addition, we actively contribute to regional energy supply:
- management of the Laussa wind park with three wind turbines
- member of the Ennstal Renewable Energy Community
- charging station for electric cars directly on the farm
This way, a large part of our energy is generated exactly where it is needed—regionally and from renewable sources.
