Our alpine cabin is nestled on the edge of a beautiful, well-tended larch forest. It is situated amidst an impressive mountain landscape with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The majestic Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain, also shapes the unique backdrop of this exceptional location.
Our alpine cabin offers simple and rustic living, yet is cozily furnished and equipped with all the essentials for a relaxing stay. Its unique location in the midst of vast alpine meadows makes it a true retreat—here, you are more likely to encounter cows than people.
🦅 Where the golden eagles soar 🦅
Even the drive to the Sauper Alm hints at it: this place is magical in a certain way. A sparse larch forest breaks up the sun's rays. You feel as though at any moment Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, or Ronja the Robber's Daughter might emerge from the fairy-tale forest to greet you.
🏔 The Sauper Kasa is located at 1,750 meters above sea level on the edge of the larch forest, freestanding on an alpine meadow. Depending on the season, wild orchids, edelweiss, gentian, and the vanilla-scented black vanilla orchid bloom around the cabin. On the porch swing, you can enjoy an absolutely unobstructed view of the Grossglockner. With binoculars, you can see all the way to the world-famous Pallavicini Couloir and the Adlersruhe refuge on the Grossglockner. While you enjoy your time around the cabin, the cowbells of the grazing cattle play the melody of the alpine pasture for you. For our little guests, the stream near the cabin is the most beautiful playground: building a dam or simply throwing stones in - playing "like in the old days," time flies by.
🏚➡️🏡 Our cabin was fully renovated in 2021. It is comfortable and modern, yet equipped with a touch of alpine cabin romance. 7 cozy beds, a kitchen-living room with an additional wood-burning stove, a south-facing living room, and a modern bathroom await you.
For the evening hours, there are plenty of board games, candles, and an outdoor barbecue area. What could be better than roasting stick bread over an open fire while watching the starry night sky? Perhaps one of you plays the guitar?
Slowly, people and nature come to rest. The night on the alpine pasture is very quiet and dark: no street noise, no light from streetlamps. Only the bells of the cows can be heard. The gentle glow of the stars manages to make at least the contours of the trees visible. The next morning, the songbirds will wake you up and wish you a wonderful day on the Sauper Alm.

Winter magic at the Almhütte Messner
When the snow blankets the landscape in a white silence and the sun rises over the golden larches, it gets truly cozy here at our alpine cabin. Our cabin is nestled in the middle of the forest – quiet, sunny, and surrounded by nature that unfolds its very special magic in winter.
Inside, the fire in the stove warms the room, the scent of wood is in the air, and through the windows you can watch the snowflakes dancing outside. It is the perfect place to let go, unwind, and simply enjoy the here and now.
Whether you start your day with a snowshoe hike, a ski tour, or a toboggan ride – countless opportunities to actively experience winter await right outside the cabin door. And for those who prefer a quieter pace, you can snuggle up in a blanket, read a good book, or simply enjoy the view of the snow-covered trees.
In the evening, when the sky is clear and the stars sparkle above the larch forest, a special peace sets in. That is when you sit together over a hot tea or a glass of wine, listen to the crackling of the stove, and feel how good it is to be so close to nature.
Our Almhütte Messner offers space for cozy days for two, relaxing hours with family, or a short breakaway with friends. It is simple, but equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay – and with a whole lot of heart.
Anyone who has been here knows that winter is more than cold and snow. It is a feeling – of peace, comfort, and a genuine connection to nature.

Arrival by car... coming from the north, take the A 10 motorway, exit Bischofshofen towards Gasteinertal, at Böckstein take the car train (Autoschleuse) to Mallnitz. From there, head towards Grossglockner...
or:
Arrival via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (from May to October),
at Zell am See head towards Grossglocknerstrasse. Via the Glocknerstrasse
(toll road) to Heiligenblut.
... coming from the west via the Felbertauernstrasse (toll road)
to Lienz and then left over the "Iselsberg" to Winklern.
From there, continue towards Grossglockner.
... coming from the south on the A2 Südautobahn, at the Villach interchange change onto
the A 10 Tauernautobahn. At the Spittal / Millstätter See interchange, continue
towards Grossglockner.
TIP:
If you choose to drive via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, we recommend purchasing a 3-week ticket straight away. With a multi-day ticket, you can drive up as often as you like during this period.
This means your return journey is already paid for. And as a rule, most guests also drive up to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe at least once during their holiday.

Day ticket car: EUR 45.00
3-week ticket car: EUR 90.00
Surcharge ticket car: EUR 17.00
With a car or motorcycle day ticket, a second trip can be made with the same vehicle (linked to the license plate) in the same calendar year for 17.00 euros. The ticket from the first trip must be presented at the ticket office for this purpose.
(In winter, snow chains are required for the drive up to the hut).
Please note: The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is closed in winter and is only open from early May to late October.
